Ask ten ceramicists to make the same vessel, and you’ll find ten different answers.

Clay, proportion, balance, glaze, and firing all change from maker to maker. Techniques are shared, challenged, and refined over years of practice.

Every week is guided by a different practising ceramicist. Our circle brings together ceramicists whose work is rooted in years of making, curiosity for material, and an ongoing exploration of process, heritage and application.

Not every investment in yourself begins with a coach. Some begin with clay.

If you're considering your next self-development programme, consider starting with your hands instead.

Working with clay elevates theta and gamma wave frequencies, the brain states associated with deep creativity, flow state, and spatial-temporal processing. The prefrontal cortex, the seat of worry, planning, and self-criticism, is redirected toward sensory processing and motor control. Mental chatter quiets as your hands take over. Small amounts of dopamine rush through the brain's reward system.

The result is up to 75% stress-reduction, improved mood and a renewed sense of creative confidence.

This winter we renovate Casa Bravura.

The casa becomes the creative home for the bigger Bravura project. There will be rooms to stay and a ceramics studio for Brava Cerâmica in the garden.

Wake up to the scent of pine and rock rose, eat from the garden, and have access to the Bravura lake on both sides.

Next to being surrounded by the lake, you can get lost on the land of Bravura, or reach the beaches of the Portuguese west- and south coasts in 25 minutes.

Come home to the source of your creativity in nature.

Here, we host the first experiences of the Bravura Project

As the world catches fire, we water it. Bravura is a 242 hectares land and water restoration project on the edge of Barragem da Bravura, a vital freshwater reservoir in the Algarve.

The coming decades we will regenerate the land and water to make the dry bioregion Bravura is nested in more resilient by creating natural water retention flows, increasing biodiversity, managing an active producing farm, organising nature and creative retreats, and much more.

Brava Cerâmica and Casa Bravura are one of the first activities supporting this long-term project.

It's the corner of Portugal you come to for the light, the water and the space.

Ceramics + Water Restoration = A love story

Clay has watered dry land for centuries.

Ceramics is one of humanity's oldest technologies. More than 25,000 years old. Long before modern irrigation, clay returned water to dry land for thousands of years.

Clay makes you more creative.

Working with clay lowers cortisol, activates the brain’s flow state, and redirects attention from mental chatter to sensory experience. It’s a highly addictive craft.

Clay celebrates Portuguese heritage.

Portugal is home of Europe’s richest ceramic traditions. From terracotta to azulejos to contemporary design, it is woven into the culture in a way few countries can match.

Olá Familia Olla

Every participant makes two ollas. An olla (say: “oja”) is a traditional terracotta vessel designed to slowly release water beneath the soil. Before leaving, everyone plants one young tree on Bravura, and places one olla nearby to slowly water the seedlings.

Plant your tree.

Plant your olla.

Your olla will water the earth.
Your tree becomes part of a forest thriving with life.

Founder Story

Félice van der Sandt

In early 2026, recovering from an unexpected back surgery, I wanted to immerse myself in ceramics. Not a weekly class, but a week-long retreat. For me, to calm is to create, and to be in nature with animals. Between April and June I searched the south of Portugal where we work on the Bravura Project, and found nothing of the sort. There were plenty of excellent classes, but no immersive retreats, despite Portugal's deep pottery heritage. That gap became the idea.

Learning Hand Building techniques. Little did I know I would be able to make 7 vessels in one weekend.

“I wanted to fully focus on a craft for a week, to get out of my head. I couldn’t find what I was looking for. That’s how Brava was born.”

BRAVA!

You made it all the way here.
You’ll make a great ceramicist.
